My upcoming journey into China for the Broadcast Cable Series, " Great Getaways " begins long before my bags are packed and ready to go.
I begin with the study of thousands of years of history that has brought China to this moment of time, a long history of struggle, and accomplishment, of varied dynasties, and sways in control and power and the struggle of a people awakened unto themselves in the upward rush of a people destined, like all of us on earth, to become more self-reliant, self-enlightened, responsible, participatory, and free.
With one fifth of the worlds population, and with one of the largest landmasses in the world, whose borders and boundaries have felt the sway of many battles, incursions, and whose peoples reflect the diversity of many origins, China is positioned and is elevating into a greater, and more noble state.
Out of the violence of war was born the gentle philosophy of Confucious and Taoism, and where Buddhism has great appeal. For the most part, China has had throughout her history, a tolerance for freedom of religion, and an intolerance for political discussion, argument, and free thought.
Out of the ineptitude and selfish aggrandizement of imperial rule, was born the revolution of the masses that created new dynasties, and the Republic of China.
Out of foreign imperial aggression , and civil war, was born the current Republic of China, like all of us, a work in progress, and out of the incessant need for change comes hope for all mankind, the
continual reworking and ascent of humanity into a more liberal, self-reliant, state that is moving towards helping to solve the problems besetting her, and the rest of the world.
All things must grow, evolve, change.
China faces the same environmental issues and needs as do we all, and out of common need we all must evolve as participatory partners towards a greener, cleaner, energy self-reliant, environmentally friendly world.
Humanity hopefully has the wisdom, to harness energy that is non-polluting, non-poisoning, clean, green, on everyone's horizon, power derived from renewable sources of solar, wind, water, geothermal, nuclear , as eternal as the energy that keeps our heavens and universes running smoothly, beyond the primitive burning of fossil fuels and polluting coals, beyond the primitive man.
Air currents move from country to country, and the low lying basins of China are not the only sources from whence her problems in air quality derive. All of us must play our parts in helping to create a world that works to sustain and cherish all life.
China faces also, the need to learn how to allow intelligent perspective, argument , with non-violent, non-repressive means of reaction, assessment , sharing and encouraging dialogue for responsible change, through vigorous dialogues of alternative thought.
There must be non-violent means of making adjustments and shifts, or bloody mass revolution, civil unrest, and sublimation will remain the modus operandi, one volcanic eruption after another.
Without a system of checks and balances, corruption and bribery can never be defeated, and humanity can not rise above systems which allow the worst elements of society to self-serve.
We all have the ability to participate in our world, giving our selves voice and responsibility towards creating a more perfect world and way of living together in fairness, justice, truth, and harmony.- percepts of Heaven meeting Earth. Confucius, and the wisest teachers of the world have long advocated such.
Necessity always pulls us towards change.
In preparing for the 2008 Olympics, to welcome in the world, China has beefed up her infrastructure with modern new airports and transportation systems capable of receiving the world she now welcomes into her borders, and is taking her rightful place once more alongside each of us, as a partner in shifting humanity towards a more enlightened and elevated state.
All possibilities lay before us, and the wisdom to control our numbers, our pollutions, our minds geared towards the freedom of choice to attain our maximum capacities for good, living in harmony with all life in the great garden. This remains one of the most pressing needs of our time.
Out of China is blowing a new wind of change, a new revolution, that all humanity is taking part in.
We are beginning to break free of the darkest fears and powers, and are beginning to rise in a new wave of enlightened thought that makes each of us a bridge into tomorrow.
I prepare my journey into China with these thoughts,
and welcome the opportunity to learn, share, and experience our common humanity. The next few weeks will be unfolding a new experience with the China of today.
Join me here through these broadcasts to experience a small bit of China, as I will be traveling with China Spree on the journey of " China's Best Treasures."
I have been offered words of advice: " Be patient, flexible, open and good natured. China is a learning experience, not an escape, an adventure, not a getaway, a new challenge, not necessarily a holiday."
I come into China as an invited guest, to document, to learn, to share her beauty and hospitality, to interact with her people. As Confucius once said, " Isn't it a delight to have friends coming from afar!".
I come as a friend.
