This monument to poetry is located out on The Point in Palo Alto, California, and contains a bronze plate of the poem "Phoenix Arise!" by Tamara Lynn Scott. The poem won the New Millennium Poetry Contest in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2000. The Butterfly House
Based on the Mayan Symbol of Eternal
Spiritual Return

Home is designed as a Single Level with a
North Roof slanting in towards the center
circular courtyard, to bring water to interior
fountains, and then to rainwater storage under
the home.
Slanted roofs for Solar Photovoltaic
mountings Utilize roofing by Authentic Roofing,
made of recycled automobile tires,
a slate look alike.

Curved walls of the structure are created with
Rastra Block, a structural form of recycled
styrofoams for concrete,
on the sunny south side,
Representing butterfly wings,
with straight walls on the north side.

The Home is shaped like a butterfly, with
entrance to the south through couble wide
doors provided by Jeld-Wen, and entrance
that enters into a circular center dancing area,
representing the body of the butterfly ,
Which opens to the north side patio,
created with Trex composite decking.

Rainwater collection from the roof to storage
in D-Raintanks which are located under the
home and exterior decking areas.

Bamboo flooring from Eco-Timber is featured
on the dancing area as well as throughout the
home on both radiantly heated floors, and on
the walls.

Master Bedroom suite has a joining diagonal
walled bathroom with skylights from Velux,
Totos water saving toilet,
and Toto Bathtub and sink.

French Walkout doors are featured from Jeld-
Wen.

The Kitchen also features a Toto sink,

Windows and Doors throughout the home are
featured from Jeld-Wen and Milgard,
utilizing auralast and Vinyl.

Recycled wood furniture is featured from
Berkeley

The Kitchen Pantry is dug into the cement slab
floors of the kitchen for natural coolness.

There is a pantry for recyled goods, and
composting drawer with a removable bin.

A Herb and Vegi garden is located immediately
outside the kitchen door.

Cement floors throughout the home are heated
with Radiant Floor Heating by Quietside, and
are covered over by bamboo flooring from
Ecotimber.

Dimension 1 hot tub is featured on the western
outdoor patio area, surrounded by Trex
composite decking created in a sunburst of
various colors and shades, as well as a
covering gazebo like rounded temple to
partially shelter the rounded form tub.

Hot Water heating solar panels are located just
slightly below the hot tub to provide
preheated water to the spa in a closed loop
passive rise system.

The Rounded, Wedge Shaped House

Created from Rastra Block,
a rounded walled, 2 story home,
With a central mass of columned fireplace,
which also uses Rastra Block which has been
sculpted on edges and for artistic form,
Lined with firebrick, with a metal flu,
heating living room, dining room, and kitchen
areas.

Bamboo flooring and walls from Ecotimber are
used throughout, covering over cement slab
on the ground level, heated with radiant floor
heat which is supplemented by solar hot water
panels on the ground level.
Led lighting is utilized throughout the home,

Windows and Doors featuring Jeld-Wen
Auralast, and interior hand carved doors,

Milgard Vinyl Windows and Doors are also
featured along with

Skylights in the bathrooms, bedrooms and
Kitchen by Velux

2 Bathrooms feature Toto water saving toilets,
with Zuma bathtubs and sinks for the upper
story bathroom,

Americh bathtubs and Toto toilet and sinks for
1st floor bathroom

Kitchens featuring Toto sinks

Awnings on the west side protect the glass for
summertime shading.

Authentic Roofing, a slate look alike made of
recycled automotive tires, is featured on the
sloped roof which angles for mountain solar
photovoltaic panels.

Radiant Floor heating systems from Quietside
are utilized on the ground floor level in the
cement slab floor, covered over by warm
Brazilian Cherry woods from Ecotimber,
which also create the bookshelves and kitchen
cabinetry.

A Solar powered Hydronic System is utilized.

Rainwater collection via gutter system fills
greywater D- Raintanks.

Solar photovoltaic panels are roof mounted.

Paving utilizes Gopla, made of recycled
plastics

Terraced stepped outdoor deck features a
rectangular Dimension One Hot tub inset into
Trex composite decking.

A Driveway circles up to the mountain top
building site and enters into garage on east
side of home. Gopla recycled plastic paving
supplements the gravel drive for greater
permanence.

A large Porch enhances the entrance, with
double French inward opening doors featured
custom carvings created by Jeld-Wen.

Fireplace is positioned to allow easy cooking opening into the Kitchen, and living room spaces.

Bedroom on first floor has a French glassed
double wide door for outside access through
master bathroom by Milgard in Vinyl.

Skylights by Velux are over the tub area.

Tub , sink , and water saving toilet are by Toto.

Hardwood floors are featured throughout the
home in Brazilian Cherry by Ecotimber.

a Sunroom space off the Master Bedroom by
Admiral Sunrooms opens up to a roof garden
and outdoor whirlpool tub by Americh.

Lines on the living room floor curves to
delineate the cement slab, radiant heated
floor, to allow sun gain, covered with mosaic
marble.

The Floor Transitions to woods that are
mosaiced with differing colors by Ecotimber.

56 solar panels are mounted on sloped roofs of
slate looking material provided by Authentic
Roofing from Canada.

D- Rainwater tanks hold collected greywaters
from the kitchen and bathrooms for garden
irrigation, buried under the home.

Watertank for composting water
and separate cleaner rainwaters are recycled
for usage to Toto water saving toilets.

All windows, provided by Milgard and Jeld-
Wen, open to allow nightflushing.

Rastra Block is used to create rounded exterior
walls in cement, some sculptured.

garden terrace area, complete with exterior
whirlpool tub by Americh.

Arched double wide doors by Jeld Wen open
out onto the upper roof garden area,.

Rounded walls
Sculpted and Curved are created from Rastra
Block,
a Recyled Styrofoam concrete form.

Angled walled Dining room
features arched Windows and Doors of Jeld-
Wen and Milgard

Bathrooms feature Toto water saving toilets
fed from rainwater and greywater collection
tanks by D-rainwater, solar pumped to gravity
feed holding tanks on the roof.

Toto Bathtub and Sink

Zuma tub and sink is featured in the for upstairs
indoor bathroom

Hydronic solar panels for hot water are
mounted at ground level for passive hot water
rise, suplimented with solar pumps.

Greywater tank by D-Rainwater is used on
ground level to collect excess rains.

All windows are provided by Milgard and Jeld-
Wen open to allow cool air for nighttime
flushing.

The Roof utilizes a pitched Authentic Roofing,
Slate look alikes made from recycled auto
tires for mounting solar panels.

Solar Panels are all mounted on the roof.

An Interior fireplace in rectangular form is
created from cement and sculptured with
rastra block, open to the kitchen for cooking,
dining room, and living room.

Bamboo wood floors from Ecotimber are
featured throughout the home, highlighted in
various shades to create artistic patterns.

the Jennifer Richards Home:

Features a Driveway which enters up the
mountain to a garage which is usable as a
studio on the east side.

34 solar panels are roof mounted on sloped roof
provided by Authentic roofing.

The home features rounded walls on south,
created from Rastra Block, with flat walls on
east, west, and north.

Rainwater is collected in buried D-rainwater
tanks for irrigation with cleaner water used
for toilet flushing.

34 solar photovoltaic panels are roof mounted.

Hot tub by Dimension One Spas is featured on
the west side ground level and surrounded by
Trex composite decking in various colors.

A trellice is used to shade the west glass
window wall, provided by Milgard.

Structure is created by Rastra block.

Jeld-Win Arched Double doors exit to south
entrance, and north,

Skylights in bathrooms , Kitchen, and
Bedrooms are by Velux

Fireplaces on both first and upper floors have
separate chimneys, but could be re-designed
to utilze only one chimney. .

Radiant Floor Heating is provided by Quietside,
and is supplemented with hot water solar
panels located on ground level for passive hot
water rise..

This home is designed with a flat roof, with skylights by Velux.

Bamboo flooring and walls throughout are by
Ecotimber and are Amber colored.
using sustainable wood harvesting.

Brazilian Cherry Ecotimber is used for
countertops and all cabinetry in kitchen.

Energy Star rated appliances are featured.

Rastra is the primary building material.

Counterproduction in Berkeley has been
featured for countertops.

Recycled living room carpet by Shaw,
Which can be replaced in panels.

Either Rammed earth walls or Rastra Block,
surround the stairway,
Which can also be constructed of Rastra
Block

Travertine tile on entrance over radiant heated
slab flooring by Quietside.

Bathroom features Zuma matching tub and sink
with a Toto Energy saving toilet

Skylights in bathrooms are by Velux on upper
story.

Lower Bathroom features Americh Whirlpool
tub.

Double wide arched entrance doors by jeld-
Wen are featured.

Windows and Doors of Milgard Vinyl
And Jeld-Wen vinyl.

Wood cabinetry by Ecotimber woods –
sustainablly harvested.

Stairs are hidden by a rastra block curved and
sculpted– wall with built in bookshelves

Slight incline on the roof is covered with
Authentic Roofing, a slate look alike made of
recycled auto tires, to allow rainwater to drain
and for mounting solar panels.

Stairs and fireplace are thermal mass unit at
center of the home.
